I must admit that this list is a bit late, and I should have called it Things I Learned in 2007, but I think this is good enough.
Many of these things amaze myself, even now.
- Dueling is legal in Paraguay as long as you are a blood donor. When I told my friend about this one, he laughed so hard that he choked. Some people, however, take a little while to get it.
- The pound (#) symbol is actually called an octothorpe. I thought it was called a tic-tac-toe button, except I couldn’t possibly imagine how one could play tic-tac-toe on that little button.
- Only half of the people who live in China know how to speak Mandarin, which is the official language. That sometimes makes me sad, but then again, there are many divisions of the language. I can’t understand a word of Guangdong’s people. Only Beijing.
- The Australian town of Eucla has its own time-zone. It’s ahead from Greenwich time by eight hours and forty-five minutes. That isn’t fair. I still remember the day when I created my own very little time zone of six hours and fifty-three minutes. I was late for school.
- Math is useful! When I grow up, I’ll use it 14 times a day on average. That makes me wonder. Of course, the key there is average. And it didn’t say anything about specific skills. Unless I’m a mathematician, I wouldn’t care less about Pi being 3.1415926. And that was right off the top of my head.
So there you have it. My confusing list of 5 things I didn’t know a year ago. Have a nice day.
