Not There

My little dog Peanut doesn’t get things. He knows the complicated things, yet he can’t piece together the simplest, either.

Allow me to give you an example. Whenever my dad steps into the garage and calls, “Peanut”, the dog doesn’t come. After that, for the next ten minutes, he isn’t going to let my dad go within two feet of him without jumping away. It’s the same with my mom.

However, if my mom simply just walks into the garage and without calling his name, starts to unload groceries or something like that, the dog deems it safe and goes in with him. Same with my dad.

On the contrary, he’s also really dimwitted. Case in point: The whole family comes home from a walk. That’s three people. We put Peanut inside his crate. We go into the house. My dad and I come out with books, ready to go to the library. We get into the car, drive away, and come back after thirty minutes. My mom says the dog hasn’t barked. Why? Because he can’t put together the fact that 3-2=1. Sarcastically speaking, he knows for sure that 3-2=0, right?

Just yesterday, I came home from school. Mom goes in and goes where it’s impossible to see her from the back door. I open the door to let myself in. Peanut goes in, and without thinking (because, again, he simply just knows for sure that nobody is behind him) he rushes up the stairs. He shoots straight into the computer room. The thunder of his steps can be heard from below.

I laugh. My mom laughs. I tell my mom, “Call him.”

So my mom says, “PEANUT!”

And not half a second later, you can hear that thu-thump-bump of him coming down, and before you know it, he’s half falling down the stairs and half running down.

Careless mistakes, eh? Or in other words, stupid ones.
